City of Montgomery
Master Plan
The City of Montgomery master plan began the rebirth of downtown Montgomery in 2001. The 20-year plan encompasses the entire riverfront edge from Powder Magazine Park to the Northern Boulevard Bridge, the downtown core and adjacent neighborhoods, and areas including West Montgomery, North Montgomery, and the State Capitol district.
When developing the master plan, the following key needs were addressed:
Identify planning, urban design, environmental, and economic opportunities and constraints
Establish an overall planning and design framework with significant contribution from community members
Outline a strategic implementation that identifies phases, probable costs, catalyst projects, and issues in need of further testing and study
The plan sought to position the riverfront as a beacon for residents, visitors, and business owners. Two of the public-identified catalyst projects, Riverwalk Stadium and Riverfront Amphitheater were completed within the first three years. Over $1 billion in public and private funds have been invested in the area thus far as a result of the plan’s implementation.
