Montgomery interstate gateways to become a lot more colorful

Article written by Pat Byington of The Bama Buzz

Alabama’s Capital City is about to get a lot more colorful.

Thanks to a partnership between the Montgomery Housing Authority and City of Montgomery, special RGB (red, green, blue) lighting will be installed at three prominent interstate gateway bridges under I-85 at:

  • Union Street

  • Decatur Street

  • Jackson Street

The idea behind the project is to create a welcoming and attractive gateway into the city for visitors entering Montgomery off the three interstate exits. In addition to the new gateways, the new lighting connects historic neighborhoods, notably Centennial Hill to Alabama State University.

The project is part of a $450,000 federal grant that is earmarked for community revitalization.

We’ve really enjoyed this project and the opportunity to continue our relationship with the Montgomery Housing Authority and the City of Montgomery. It’s always exciting to work on projects close to home. We hope the updates enhance the experience of visitors and residences alike.

Montgomery-based Chambless King Architects is designing the project. Garner & Associates Engineering will be handling electrical engineering services.

This is one of many projects Chambless King has designed around the city that is the  Birthplace of the Civil Rights Movement. The group recently designed the award winning Montgomery Interpretive Center of Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail located at Alabama State University.
