University of Alabama at Birmingham Volker Hall
4th + 5th Floor Renovation

The fourth and fifth floors of Volker Hall are primarily utilized for student-facing functions for the UAB Heersink School of Medicine’s Department of Medical Education. These floors include classrooms, student lounges, and restrooms.

The two floors had not received a substantial renovation since original construction more than 20 years ago and exhibited significant signs of wear from heavy usage. This project refreshed the space by installing new finishes, fixtures, and furnishings; adding a variety of huddle, collaboration, group study, and individual study spaces; and updating audio-visual equipment and ADA compliance. The renovated space provides an improved student experience and reflects the pedagogical needs for contemporary medical education.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham has secured Chambless King Architects for the next two phases of renovation within Volker Hall.
