Leaders gathered in West Tuscaloosa Tuesday to break ground on the new $12 million Benjamin Barnes YMCA after a decade of delays and debates about the facility's future.

The Barnes branch first opened in 1961 at 2939 18th Street in West Tuscaloosa with funds raised by Black leaders to serve their community - the Civil Rights Act did not outlaw segregation until 1964.

Priceville Event Center to open this month with multisport gym, walking track

PRICEVILLE — The $7.2 million Priceville Event Center will open this month with a multisport gymnasium and second-floor walking track eight years after city officials first discussed building a recreation center and six years after they borrowed money for it.

Officials gave a tour of the center Tuesday, and its other features include a multipurpose room that can seat around 90 people at tables, an exercise gym and a catering kitchen. The city plans a ceremony at the building at 6 p.m. Wednesday and will open the 26,000-square-foot facility for public viewing. However, the facility won't become operational until final details and inspections are completed, Priceville Mayor Sam Heflin said.

Metal Building System Houses Structural Testing Laboratory

Structural testing of building materials takes place inside Auburn University’s Advanced Structural Engineering Laboratory (ASEL) in Auburn, Ala. On the exterior of the building, Chambless King Architects created a design that communicates the structural testing activities taking place internally. Furthermore, in addition to meeting requirements to house the testing facilities themselves, the firm highlighted the building’s structure by exposing it.

Upcoming development in Decatur expected to be bigger than Guntersville’s City Harbor

Sunday evening, Decatur Mayor Tab Bowling shared on Facebook that developers are working on plans for a new riverside development near Ingalls Harbor.

The project is under development by Patrick Lawler, who built Guntersville’s City Harbor. City Harbor is home to restaurants, stores, and boat slips. City leaders in Guntersville say the development is a major economic driver.

Bowling believes similar development would be a hub for economic development in Decatur.

“Developments that are on the river in this nature have a little bit of pop to them. It also adds a cool factor to them as well,” he said.

ASU hosting formal opening and celebration of the Montgomery Interpretive Center

A formal opening and celebration of the Montgomery Interpretive Center (MIC) at Alabama State University will be held on March 26 at 3:00 p.m.

The event will be held at the Montgomery Interpretive Center, located on the University campus in front of The ASU Stadium on the corner of Harris Way and North University.

The MIC celebrates Montgomery’s storied history of the famous 1965 Selma to Montgomery March that helped obtain voting rights for black citizens.

First games to be played at Etowah County Mega Sports Complex

For the first time, there’s going to be actual athletic activity at the Etowah County Mega Sports Complex in Rainbow City.

The complex on Saturday will host the Northeast Alabama Soccer Officials’ annual training event, according to a news release from Greater Gadsden Area Tourism.

The event will feature 29 boys’ and girls’ high school teams playing at least 38 games, to give referees required training to qualify them for state playoff consideration.

Comparisons are often made between Fort Payne and Albertville in terms of economic development. The Sand Mountain Park & Amphitheater announced this week it has generated $23.2 million in economic impact for Marshall County during the timeframe of October 2021-September 2022.
